About Mijas

The pretty white village of Mijas is located in the mountain side 428m above sea level and 7 km inland of the costal town of Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol.

Although popular with tourists the village has retained much of its traditional Spanish way of life and charm. The village is split into several levels linked by narrow cobbled streets lined with tiny shops offering local wares such as leatherwork, ceramics and jewellery. These streets lead into squares (Plazas) which offer a wide choice of restaurants and bars where you can sit and enjoy some local food, a glass of wine or a cold beer and just soak up the atmosphere.

One of the best ways to see the village is by way of the Mijas donkey taxi these can be found in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña which is the largest of the village squares where many of the local festivities take place. The main celebration being the Feria (local village fair) this is held each year around the beginning of September. There are also many events throughout the year including an International Day, a Celtic night and a Latino Night amongst others.

Another the squares is the Plaza de la Constitucion above which is located the Bullring (Plaza de los Toros) and the beautiful Paraochia Church adjacent to which is the village auditorium which hosts a series of musical and theatrical events at various times of the year. This area is surrounded by the Muralla gardens a park area with viewpoints from which can be seen spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast.

Other places to visit in the village include the Ermita de Virgen de la Peña which is a shrine carved out of solid rock dating back to 1586 a tribute to the patron saint of Mijas. On the hillside above the village is the shrine of Calvario built in 1710. There is a walkway up to the shrine from the village and the panoramic views which can be seen from the shrine make the walk worthwhile. The other two churches in the village are the 18th century Iglesia de Santana and the 17th century church of San Sebastian.
