Activities to do around Mijas

There is a wide choice of things to do – all within easy reach of Mijas. Here are some suggestions … 

Aquaparks

 Mijas Costa – Around 10 minutes drive from the village of Mijas this water park is located just off the main N340 coast road near McDonalds.

The park is normally open from around Easter time to the end of September. There are various discounts on offer including one for afternoon guests and another for visitors who want to spend more than one day there.

Torremolinos – There is another water park located near the town of Torremolinos around 20 minutes drive from Mijas. This park is also easy to find being located just off the N340 in the direction of Malaga.

Boat Trips

There are various boat trips on offer along the coast including one which runs regularly between Fuengirola and Benalmadena and vice versa. This makes a particularly good day out if you take the boat from Fuengirola in the morning you can spend a few hours exploring the port of Benalmadena and perhaps having lunch at one of the many restaurants there before returning to Fuengirola in the afternoon. The boat takes around 45 minutes each way and the prices are very reasonable being 12€ for adults and 7€ for children for the return trip. (Summer 2006).

Cable cars (Teleferico)

Why not enjoy a spectacular ride in the cable cars which link Benalmadena costa with Mount Calamarro 800 m. above sea level. The cablecar is located just below Tivoli world in Benalmadena. At the summit of the mountain there are donkey rides an exhibition and demonstration of birds of prey and Spanish horse riding displays. There is also a series of walkways with look out points from which to enjoy the amazing views. It is possible to walk back down from the summit but it will take around 2 hours and suitable footwear and plenty of drinking water are recommended!

Caves of Nerja

Situated 2 km east of Nerja (just over an hours drive) is one of the most beautiful underground cave systems in Europe. Concerts of music and ballet are held in the caves periodically.

Cinemas 

There is a multi cinema complex located in the Miramar shopping mall just off the N340. This cinema normally offers the latest films in English as well as Spanish.

Crocodile Park

The park boasts over 300 crocodiles and is located just next to the aquapark in Torremolinos.

Horse racing (Hipodromo)

Located just a few minutes down the coast in the direction of Marbella at El Chaparral is the Mijas race course. The racing is held during the day in the winter months and in the evening during the summer. In July and August the racing doesn't normally start until 10.30p.m! There are restaurants and bars at the course offering live music and entertainment into the early hours.

Horse riding

There are many equestrian centres in the area. Around 15 minutes drive from Mijas is the Alhaurin Golf and Country Club which has a good riding school.
