Marbella and Puerto Banús

Marbella, around 30 minutes drive from Mijas is well known through out the world as the sophisticated and fashionable resort of the Costa del Sol. It has a traditional old historic part of the town with narrow streets and squares the most famous of which is Plaza de Los Naranjos. The modern part of the city boasts designer shops, high class hotels etc. There is a long paseo which runs along beside the sea front where there are many bars and restaurants as well as the traditional chiringitos (beach restaurants specialising in fresh fish).

Puerto Banús is just a little further on from Marbella and is without doubt the millionaires playground of the Costa del Sol. The marina houses a great many luxurious yachts (and sometimes the cars to go with them!) All along the quayside are designer boutiques and elegant restaurants. It's a great place to sit and watch the world go by!

Nerja

Located around 50kms east of Malaga (1 ¼ hours drive) is the town of Nerja. Known for its underground caves and for the Balcon de Europa , once a traditional fishing village it has grown into a popular destination for holidaymakers. However it has still retained much of its original charm. Its typically winding streets with whitewashed buildings and terraces overflowing with colourful plants house many interesting shops and restaurants. The Balcon de Europa is a tree lined promenade with many cafes and is a very popular meeting place. The promenade extends out into the sea and from the viewpoint there are spectacular views in both directions along the coast. From here it is possible to hire a horse drawn carriage to explore the town.

There are many fine beaches in this area with a good variety of water sports available.

Ronda

Full of history, Ronda is one of the loveliest towns in the area. It is situated in the mountains some 50 kms inland from Marbella. (Take the coast road to San Pedro de Alcantara and then turn right to follow the road through the mountains to Ronda) The town is most famous throughout Spain for its plunging gorge which divides the medieval from the 18th century part of the town. The gorge is known as El Tajo and is spanned by a stone bridge which once housed a prison. The views from this area over the countryside below are superb.

Full of history and legends Ronda is also famous for its bullring, the oldest and largest in Spain. It was made famous in the 18th Century by the legendary bullfighter Pedro Romero who killed over 5000 bulls in his career. You can visit the bullring and its museum when there is no bullfighting in progress
